ABOUT
SDP’s History
The State Democracy Project is a public charity. SDP’s 501(c)3 application was approved in 1997 and it has operated continuously since then with a steady focus on improving democracy by removing barriers that too often deter participation by everyday Americans.
SDP Today
Today, the State Democracy Project concentrates on nurturing grassroots initiatives, especially those rooted in historically marginalized communities. We are committed to make ours a more responsive democracy by serving as the fiscal sponsor for such groups.
Our fiscal sponsorship program has been developed based on best practices, as embraced by the National Network of Fiscal Sponsors, and in close consultation with our legal counsel and audit team. Most of our sponsorship relationships are based on the “PreApproved Grant Relationship” model as defined in Fiscal Sponsorship: 6 Ways to Do It Right by Colvin and Petit.
SDP’s board and staff are committed to keeping SDP’s overhead cost minimal so that the sponsorship fees can be as low as possible without compromising our obligations to be accountable and transparent to our primary stakeholders: our sponsored projects and their funding communities
